Stanines are what admissions actually reads
Each ISEE section produces a scaled score, a percentile, and a stanine (1 to 9). Admissions committees almost always read the stanine first. Stanine 9 is the top 4% of test-takers; stanine 8 the next 7%; stanine 7 the next 12%. Competitive independent schools want stanines of 7+, the most selective want 8 or 9. Tracking prep progress against the stanine target, not the scaled score, is what aligns with how admissions actually decides.

Quantitative Reasoning is its own section, not a math computation race
Quantitative Reasoning tests mathematical reasoning, not computation. Word problems, logical deduction, pattern recognition, estimation, comparison of quantities. The Upper Level includes Quantitative Comparison, a question type unique to the ISEE. Students who treat it as a computation race miscompute and lose points; students who read carefully and identify what the problem actually asks score significantly higher.

No calculator on either math section

Time pressure matters; sit full timed mocks
ISEE sections are timed tightly. Quantitative Reasoning is 35 minutes for roughly 37 questions; Mathematics Achievement is 30 to 40 minutes for 30 to 47 questions depending on level. Students who have not practiced under the real timer run out of time. From six to eight weeks before test date, sit one full timed past paper per week under real exam conditions, mark against the official scoring guide, and review with the tutor.

ISEE Math, by level and section
The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) is one of the two major standardized tests used for admission to American independent (private) schools, alongside the SSAT. The ISEE is administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) and is the preferred or required admissions test for many independent schools across the United States, particularly on the East Coast and in the Mid-Atlantic. The exam comes in three levels: Lower Level for students applying to enter grades 5 and 6, Middle Level for grades 7 and 8, and Upper Level for grades 9 through 12 (most commonly used for grade 9 admissions to independent high schools). Each level tests the same five sections in the same order, but the content and difficulty scale to the appropriate age band. The exam can be taken in paper or digital format depending on the testing location and family preference.
The five ISEE sections are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and an unscored Essay. This page focuses on the two math sections (Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement) which together account for about 40% of the testing time and roughly equal weight in admissions decisions. The questions are more directly tied to grade-level math curriculum than Quantitative Reasoning is, and most students who have kept up with their school math do reasonably well here with focused prep. Mathematics Achievement is also calculator-prohibited at all three ISEE levels.
The scoring is structured differently from the SAT or ACT and worth understanding clearly because it shapes how admissions committees actually read scores. Each ISEE section produces a scaled score (between 760 and 940), a percentile rank, and most importantly a stanine (a 1-to-9 score derived from the percentile). Independent school admissions committees almost always look at the stanine first, not the scaled score or percentile. The stanine compresses scores into nine bands: stanine 9 is the top 4% of test-takers, stanine 8 the next 7%, stanine 7 the next 12%, and so on down to stanine 1 at the bottom 4%. Competitive independent schools typically want to see stanines of 7 or higher in math sections; the most selective schools want 8 or 9. A student moving from a stanine 6 to a stanine 8 has improved meaningfully more in admissions terms than the raw scaled-score difference might suggest, because the stanine is what the committee compares across applicants.
The section-adaptive question type allowed for one major change with the recent digital ISEE format. The paper format remains static (every test-taker sees the same questions). The digital format introduced a section-adaptive structure where module-two question difficulty adjusts based on module-one performance, similar to how the digital SAT works. The two formats produce equivalent stanines but the prep strategy differs slightly. Families should confirm which format the testing location uses before tailoring prep.
The Quantitative Reasoning prep approach. The most common mistake on this section is treating it as a computation race. Quantitative Reasoning rewards careful reading first and computation second; students who race through the word problems and miscompute the easier arithmetic lose more points than students who read carefully and compute steadily. Which ISEE level should my child take?
Lower Level for students applying to enter grades 5 and 6. Middle Level for students applying to enter grades 7 and 8. Upper Level for students applying to enter grades 9 through 12 (most commonly used for grade 9 admissions to selective independent high schools, with some schools also using it for transfer admissions to grades 10, 11, or 12). The level is determined by the entry grade the child is applying for, not by the child's current grade. What stanine should my child aim for?

Can ISEE Math prep be online?
