Tutor Bio

Hallo, my name is Cyril and I'm from Zurich, the cultural center of
Switzerland. Before coming to America and receiving and MFA in fine
arts I tutored German at different stages of my studies.
I have a strong and varied interest in Germanic literature; among my
favorite authors are Jean Paul Richter, (of whom Goethe said that his
writing made his head hurt),
Heinrich von Kleist, who wrote the short story with the longest
introductory sentence, E.T.A Hoffmann, Friedrich Glauser, Robert
Walser, Franz Kafka, Thomas Bernhard and many others.
I believe in teaching German by using individual students’ fields
of interest and adapting to every specific need.

Learn more about Cyril

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

i like the cruder German term for tramp stamp, the so called Arschgeweih. translated as ass antler. Seems more honest, ridiculous and less judgy

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

I like the authentic Swiss blood sausage (Blutwurst), not served outside of Switzerland, it's only served in the the fall and needs to be fresh. No way of ever getting it here.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

My first foreign language was French, i speak and understand some Italian and Spanish .

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I'm a painter and father as my other main pursuits. I used to be a quite committed boxer, recently aged out of that and now I partake in weekly parents vs kids soccer skirmishes.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I moved to LA '97. At this point I consider myself an Angelino with Swiss roots. LA is a remarkable mess of a city, with amazing history, beautiful and disturbing, boasting amazing exile communities, one of the only mayor world capitals that does not fall into the scheme of a centralized European type city. I love it!

Cyril is a fantastic teacher. I have taken a group class with him for 2+ months now and already feel immensely more confident in all aspects of my German understanding, but most notably my speaking and audio comprehension. His style of teaching works really well for me - I struggle with feeling confident in my production due to a lack of knowledge on grammar/vocab and used to have a big fear of making mistakes. Cyril emphasizes that although grammar/vocab are very important, the best thing you can do to learn is to simply speak and write as much as possible, even if you make mistakes, because over time you will begin to get a feel (as native speakers do) for what is right. And, if we do make mistakes, Cyril is a self-proclaimed grammar nerd and will kindly correct it and review with us how/why it was incorrect or what we can improve upon. Everything is a learning opportunity, and he is excellent at clearly and succinctly explaining things. He makes class incredibly fun and engaging. I genuinely never feel bored, and always feel like I am learning something new. We have in-depth discussions on history, pop culture, literature and digital media. We read and translate together in almost every class, and practice writing short stories or small essays that he provides feedback on. He conducts the class in a way that feels both structured and free-flowing, and is very clearly passionate about the German language and loves teaching. I couldn't begin to recommend him more, he has been invaluable to my growth with German and any student would be lucky to learn with him.

Incredible teacher, 10/10 recommend. Cyril is a wonderful guy, very helpful and insightful, and very patient. I already had a background in German at both a high school and collegiate level, but he helped unlock things that I never knew/understood in my earlier studies. His love for the German language and Germanic culture is very evident, and I not only grew in my speaking, writing and reading abilities, but also in my appreciation for the culture and the language itself. I'm sure he's wonderful as a beginner teacher, but for an intermediate/early advanced, he helped me get inside the linguistics and really understand the language structure in a way that really propelled me.

Cyril is a great teacher! We spend most of the classes having interesting discussions and reading fascinating stories. Cyril has helped me come out of my shell and speak more. My favorite part of class is writing stories or journal entries and reading them aloud. My conversational German has gotten so much better!
