Tutor Bio

Ciao! Come va?

My name is Marianna and I’ve earned my Ph.D. in Italian Studies at UCLA.

Piacere!

I am excited for you to learn all things Italian!

Born and raised in the countryside of the Po Valley between the cities of Bologna and Ferrara, I moved to the US to pursue my academic career. I’ve been teaching at different institutions in Los Angeles since 2009!

I LOVE my culture and my goal is to make you fall in love with it too!

As a Language Teacher at Strommen, a Graduate Student Researcher at UC Santa Barbara, a Teaching Fellow at UCLA, and a private Tutor at LILA for the Italian IB Test, I gained extensive experience in developing, coordinating, and teaching the Italian language and culture to students age 5 and up!

Students describe my teaching as “dynamic, congenial, interactive, engaging, and anxiety-free.” They praise me for being “professional, caring, helpful, energetic, enthusiastic, encouraging, and inspiring.”

I am a native speaker of Italian, a near Native-speaker of English, and I am also fluent in Spanish and proficient in French. “Well. How does this affect my learning?” you may ask. If you’re an anglophone, hispanophone, or francophone I will show you how to delve into your linguistic arsenal to master Italian.

Whether you want to learn basic Italian, dive into Italian literature, cinema, or art, master your academic writing skills, study opera songs (yes, I taught singers from the LA Phil), or learn standard pronunciation (I also work with actors), I can help you!

Cosa aspetti? (what are you waiting for?)

Let’s learn Italian together!

A presto e grazie!

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in Italian is "cucciolo"—because it perfectly encapsulates the cuteness of its meaning: "puppy"!!! Just saying it makes you want to cuddle something fluffy. It’s playful, warm, and full of affection, much like the little creatures it describes. Plus, it works for baby animals and adorable humans, making it the ultimate word of endearment. How can you not love it? Cucciolo, cucciolino, cucciolotto...it gest cuter and cuter as you go!

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

Being from the countryside of Bologna, I have to say tortellini—tiny, perfect pasta parcels filled with deliciousness. Whether floating in a rich broth or smothered in a creamy sauce, they are pure comfort in a bowl. If you ever find yourself in Bologna (which you should!), Osteria Bottega is the place to go for an authentic, soul-satisfying tortellini experience. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Besides the languages I teach, I also speak Spanish and French—which means I can successfully order coffee and pastries in multiple countries (a handy skill, if you ask me). I love exploring languages, not just for communication but for the quirky idioms and cultural gems they reveal. Learning and speaking different languages makes the world feel closer and much more fun!

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching at Strommen, I’m a writer and a certified dog enthusiast). I also have a mild—but healthy pickleball obsession, where I attempt to dominate the court with questionable agility. Traveling fuels my soul, as I love exploring new places, pretending I belong there, and inevitably getting lost in search of the best local food. Whether I’m crafting stories, dinking in the "kitchen", or befriending dogs, life is always fun!

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

My hometown is (and will remain) my village in the countryside of Bologna—the place where all my memories are rooted. I love it for its familiar rhythms, the scent of the freshly baked pane from the local forno, the immense fields that change with the seasons, and the warmth of a community where everyone knows your name (and maybe too much about you!) It's where quiet meets tradition, where life moves at its own pace, and where every street, every old stone wall, holds a piece of my story. No matter where I go, that village will always be casa mia.

I am so happy I found Strommen and Marriana Nespoli on yelp! I have been taking Italian lessons with her since January. I was worried about joining a group class but it has been the best experience and I have learned so much! She is a fantastic teacher and really makes you feel comfortable. I am on my second round of lessons and am very impressed with how much we have learned thus far! Thanks Marriana!

Marianna was a great teacher to have for my first introduction to Italian. I've taught languages before, and right off the bat with the first class, I can tell this girl is experienced and knows exactly what she's doing. As beginners, we're all bound to make some mistakes, but we always just laugh them off because she's really excellent in ensuring our learning environment is welcoming and fun, which makes all the difference when you're learning a new language. If you go with her, you wont regret it!

I am the only member of my family that is not fluent in Italian - especially after leaving home and moving to CA, I knew I needed some help. The cost of an hour of one-on-one class is lower and more effective for me to learn, plus it's on the East side where i live. Marianna is an AWESOME teacher - patient, friendly, not intimidating, motivating and supportive. I really look forward to class with her and have seen my progress happily moving along!

I took a lesson with Marianna initially because of all the good feedback here. She was excellent. I really enjoyed her teaching style! Unfortunately, I didn't realize how far away her location was from me. It was easily over 1 hour each way which was just too much time to be sitting in traffic... If you're closer than me, I would highly recommend her!

I'm almost finished my first 10 pack class with my Italian tutor Marianna. I cannot stress this enough - she is AWESOME! I'm going to Italy in 2 weeks and feel totally confident that I can converse well enough in Italian to get around. Since the friend that I'm traveling with doesn't speak any Italian whatsoever, it will be up to me to steer us in the right direction. Marianna is personable, tailors her lessons to the "real Italian" (not the way they teach you in the book), makes me speak with her during our sessions and patiently corrects me but makes the whole experience a ton of fun. I never liked taking language classes in school growing up but this is a totally different and very enjoyable experience. At first I was hesistant about spending the money but honestly it was the best thing I did. Grazie mille Marianna!

Marianna is absolutely wonderful! If you want a teacher who will give you personalized attention, understand your needs, and keep you on your toes all while having fun then Marianna is the one for you! I needed an intensive session in Italian to prepare me for an immersive internship experience in Florence, Italy. She has given me so many tools and motivated me to accomplish more than I thought I could in a such a short amount of time over the 10 hours I signed up for. Pick Marianna for Italian at Strommen - Bravo!!!

Fantastico. I have been studying Italian with Marianna for five weeks. It has exceeded my expectations. The Italian language is so beautiful and passionate. Marianna shares her enthusiasm for the language and culture. The course requires an investment of time by the student. I can assure you that it is time well spent. Prior to taking this course, I researched several offerings on the internet. I am so happy I chose Strommen. The venues are great. It is much better than watching someone in a sterile classroom conjugating verbs. The interaction is great and personal attention make this a very enjoyable experience. Dan M.

Bravissimo! My Italian classes with Marianna were fantastic! I needed to brush up on my Italian language skills this summer and found this wonderful teacher through Strommen. The class is tailored to one's needs, in my case, conversation and I got a lot of practice in our 1 hour session every week. Can't recommend Strommen enough for Italian lessons!
