Tutor Bio

Hello, it is my honor to introduce myself to you. My name is Xin and I want to help you improve your Mandarin! I am a native Mandarin speaker from China who can speak English and I know a little Cantonese. I could teach you Mandarin as it is the language of government and education and teach you both simplified and traditional Chinese characters.

I have a degree in Business English, an FCE Cambridge English Certificate and a CELT-P Primary English Teaching Certificate, and have several years of experience working in the international education industry.

I work with secondary school kids everyday at school and am happy to teach children or adults. For children learning Mandarin, I would introduce stories and pictures in my class. For the HSK exam, I teach up to and including level 6.

Personally Vetted · Strømmen’s Note

A native Chinese speaker in Tianjin with C1 English herself, Xin opens every lesson by asking flatly what's been giving the student trouble.

Learn more about Xin

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite word in Mandarin Chinese is 清愁. It means "worries," but in a more poetic sense. For example, “动庾信、清愁似织” can be translated as “I am moved like Yu Xin, hemmed in by worries.”

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

In interviews about Tianjin cuisine, many Tianjin citizens regard guoba cuisine and jianbing guozi as the most representative local dishes.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

I have a strong passion for learning languages, as it broadens my understanding of different cultures and modes of expression.

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

I enjoy exercising because maintaining physical health is very important.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

Tianjin is governed as one of the four municipalities—alongside Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing—under the direct administration of the State Council of China. Historically, it has been a central trading point since the Mongol period in the 13th century and served as a crucial gateway for European traders. Today, Tianjin stands out as a remarkably distinct Chinese city. Its architecture is heavily influenced by European styles, giving the city a character unlike that of most other urban centers in China. I particularly love the European-style neighborhoods and the beautiful riverside. The entire downtown area feels distinctly European, and the city is well known for its unique blend of Chinese and Western cultural influences.
