Tutor Bio

Hello! My name is Sanghoon Bhang, and I am a dedicated and experienced language educator specializing in the Korean language. I am excited to help Korean language learners master the Korean language.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, as well as a master's degree in education from a U.S. university. My academic background, combined with my extensive experience teaching both Korean and English, as well as organizing language exchange events, has given me a deep understanding of the language-learning process from both a student's and a teacher's standpoint.

As a native Korean speaker, I am also fluent in English, Chinese, and Japanese. I have lived in various countries for over 15 years in total, with more than 10 of those years spent in China. I am currently teaching Korean to Chinese university students who major in the Korean language and translation. This deep, practical experience allows me to provide clear explanations in different languages and address the specific challenges that Korean language learners face when studying.

I am committed to creating a supportive, engaging, and personalized learning environment to help you achieve your goals, whether you're a beginner or an advanced learner. I look forward to the opportunity to help you master the Korean language!

  • What is your favorite word in your language and why?

My favorite Korean word is “재미” (jaemi), which means “fun” or “enjoyment.” I believe that language learning should be an enjoyable and engaging process. When students find 재미 in their studies, they become more motivated and confident, and learning happens naturally. For me, creating a classroom atmosphere full of curiosity and joy is the key to effective education.

  • What is your favorite dish from your hometown? If you no longer live there is there a good local restaurant that serves it?

My favorite dish from my hometown is 김밥 (Gimbap). It’s a simple yet versatile Korean dish made of rice, vegetables, and sometimes meat or egg, all rolled in seaweed. I love how each ingredient contributes its own flavor and color, creating perfect harmony in every bite. Gimbap also reminds me of family picnics and school trips from my childhood — it’s a food that brings people together and represents the warmth of Korean culture.

  • Besides the languages you teach, do you speak or study any other languages?

Yes, I do! In addition to Korean and English, I also speak Chinese and Japanese. I’ve always been fascinated by languages because each one opens the door to a new way of thinking and understanding people. Learning Chinese and Japanese has helped me appreciate cultural similarities and differences, and it allows me to connect more deeply with my students from diverse backgrounds. I believe that every new language adds a unique color to life!

  • What are your interests outside of teaching at Strommen?

Outside of teaching, I enjoy traveling and bike riding. During my time studying in Japan, my major focused on bicycle product design, which inspired my passion for building custom bicycle frames. I find the process of designing and creating something with my hands deeply satisfying. In addition to working with bicycles, I also enjoy crafting and carving—making things from scratch allows me to express my creativity in different ways. Whether I’m exploring new places or building something in my workshop, I’m always drawn to activities that combine curiosity, design, and hands-on creation.

  • What do you consider your hometown? Why do you love it?

I was born in a city called Masan, located about an hour from Busan, but I’ve never actually lived there. Over the past 20 years, I’ve moved and lived in many different countries, so it’s hard to define just one place as my hometown. I’ve come to feel that home is wherever I connect with people and share meaningful experiences. Each place I’ve lived has shaped who I am, and I value the sense of belonging that comes from adapting to new cultures and communities.
