5 telc Deutsch facts every candidate should lock in before booking

These aren't vocabulary lists. They're the variant-and-rubric facts that decide whether your pass is the credential the institution actually accepts. Screenshot the infographic, then book a tutor to drill the rest.

  1. 01

Confirm the exact variant before you register

telc publishes more variants than any other German exam family: A1-C2 standard, plus telc Deutsch B1 für Zuwanderer, Deutsch-Test für den Beruf B1/B2/C1, B1-B2 Pflege, B2 Pflege, B2-C1 Medizin, C1 Hochschule. The receiving institution names the variant; ask before you book. A pass on the wrong variant is a credential the institution will not accept.

e.g. Naturalization requires telc Deutsch B1 für Zuwanderer specifically, not the standard telc Deutsch B1. They are scored differently.

  2. 02

    Paired speaking from B1 up

From B1 onward, Sprechen uses a paired-candidate format. Two candidates work through structured tasks together (introductions, planning something jointly, presenting a topic). The examiner observes and scores both candidates independently. Candidates who rehearsed only solo speaking freeze when the partner steers the conversation somewhere unexpected. Practice with a tutor playing the partner role from week one of speaking prep.

e.g. Sie planen mit Ihrem Partner einen gemeinsamen Wochenendausflug. Einigen Sie sich auf das Ziel, das Verkehrsmittel und das Programm.

  3. 03

Hold Sie throughout the speaking section

The B2 and C1 speaking sections expect sustained Sie from greeting to closing. Candidates who built conversational German with friends slip into du the moment the paired discussion gets natural, and the register score drops. Practice the paired format with consistent Sie register, including the small softening particles (vielleicht, möglicherweise, könnten wir) that signal formal register without sounding stiff.

e.g. Wären Sie damit einverstanden, wenn wir zuerst die Anreise besprechen?

  4. 04

    Connectors are graded under Kohärenz

Einerseits / andererseits, darüber hinaus, im Gegensatz dazu, folglich, jedoch, dennoch, zudem. These argumentative connectors are scored explicitly under Kohärenz on the B2 and C1 writing rubrics. A 150-word B2 opinion piece without three or four of them reads as a list of points, not a structured argument. Drill them until they come automatically.

e.g. Einerseits bietet die digitale Kommunikation viele Vorteile. Andererseits geht der persönliche Kontakt teilweise verloren.

  5. 05

Pflege and Medizin variants demand the domain layer

telc Deutsch B2 Pflege and B2-C1 Medizin are not just B2 German plus a few healthcare words. They test specialized vocabulary (der Hausarzt, die Bezugspflege, der Arztbrief, die Visite, die Aufnahme) and profession-specific scenarios (handover reports, physician-patient consultations, family communication). The domain layer has to be drilled deliberately, not picked up by osmosis from general German lessons.

e.g. Eine Pflege-Übergabe: Frau Müller, 78 Jahre, Diabetes Typ 2, gestern wegen Hyperglykämie aufgenommen. Aktuelle Medikation siehe Kurve.

What you'll cover

Lessons & classes tailored to telc German Test Preparation

Variant identification + Modellsatz diagnostic

Your first lesson opens with two questions: which institution requires the credential, and which exact telc variant does that institution name? Once the variant is locked, the tutor runs a diagnostic against an official Modellsatz from telc.net for that variant and scores all four skills against the relevant rubric. Subsequent lessons rebalance toward the weakest skill while keeping the strong ones sharp. This step prevents the most expensive telc mistake: prepping for the wrong variant.

Schreiben drills at the variant-specific word count and register

Writing format differs sharply by variant. Lessons drill the structured argumentation expected at your level (thesis, weighed counterargument, synthesis from B2 up), the connector layer (einerseits, andererseits, darüber hinaus, folglich), case-marking discipline on articles and adjectives, and the formal-register vocabulary the rubric rewards. Real timed compositions each week at your variant's exact word count, graded against the official rubric, with rewrite cycles. Our German gender and case rules post supports this work between lessons.

Paired Sprechen format from B1 up

From B1 onward, telc Sprechen is paired. Lessons rehearse both presenter and reactor roles with the tutor playing the partner, recorded for playback review on register (sustained Sie), pacing, modal-particle naturalness (doch, mal, eben, halt), and recovery from an unexpected partner turn. C1 candidates rehearse the extended presentation-plus-defense format separately. Pronunciation foundations covered in our German pronunciation guide.

Variant-specific domain prep: Pflege, Medizin, Beruf, Hochschule

Specialty variants add a domain layer on top of the base-level German. Pflege prep covers handover reports, care-plan documentation, and family-communication scenarios. Medizin prep covers physician-patient consultations, the Fachsprachenprüfung case-presentation format, and clinical documentation. Beruf prep covers professional emails, meeting interactions, and workplace negotiation scenarios. C1 Hochschule prep covers chart-description openings and academic-register synthesis tasks closer to TestDaF in format. Each variant has its own Modellsatz archive at telc.net we draw from.

FAQ

About telc German Test Preparation lessons & classes

Which telc level do I need for German residency or naturalization?

For naturalization (German citizenship), the standard language requirement is B1, and the institutionally preferred credential is telc Deutsch B1 für Zuwanderer, the integration-course exit exam jointly developed with the BAMF. The standard telc Deutsch B1 is also accepted in many cases, but the für Zuwanderer variant is the canonical naturalization exam. For a spouse visa or family reunification, A1 is typically the entry minimum (telc Deutsch A1). For an unlimited residency permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), B1 is the floor. Always confirm the exact variant your local Ausländerbehörde or Standesamt names before registering, because the requirements vary slightly by state and by visa category.

How is telc different from the Goethe-Zertifikat?

Both are CEFR-aligned German proficiency exams from A1 to C2, and at the standard adult levels the credentials are broadly interchangeable for most general-purpose recognition. The institutional differences show up at the variants. telc publishes context-specific exams (B1 für Zuwanderer for integration, Deutsch-Test für den Beruf for working professionals, B2 Pflege for nursing, B2-C1 Medizin for medicine, C1 Hochschule for university admission) that Goethe does not directly mirror. For naturalization, integration courses, BAMF-aligned working-professional German, and healthcare-profession recognition, telc is usually the credential the institution names. For visa and consular contexts outside Germany and for many German university programs, the Goethe-Zertifikat is the more common standard. Pick the one your institution names.

Is telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule accepted for German university admission?

Yes, by a substantial and growing list of German universities. telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule was developed specifically as the telc-family equivalent of TestDaF for university admission, and many universities accept it on par. The acceptance is not yet universal across every German university, so verify with your target university's admissions office before booking. For broadly accepted university admission across every accredited German university, TestDaF remains the more universally recognized credential. For selective programs (medicine, law) some universities require TestDaF specifically rather than telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule.

What's the difference between telc Deutsch B1 and telc Deutsch B1 für Zuwanderer?

Both certify B1-level German under the CEFR framework, but the für Zuwanderer variant is the canonical integration-course exit exam, jointly developed with the BAMF, with prompts and scenarios calibrated to the everyday-life and civic-orientation topics integration-course attendees actually study. Naturalization caseworkers and Ausländerbehörden recognize the für Zuwanderer variant by name as evidence of integration-course completion, which the standard telc Deutsch B1 does not automatically supply. If your goal is naturalization, the spouse visa pathway, or any documentation that connects to integration-course participation, the für Zuwanderer variant is the safer choice.

Can I retake just one skill block if I miss it?

Some telc variants allow partial retake of individual skill blocks (typically Schreiben or Sprechen, sometimes Lesen plus Hören as a combined block) within a defined window after the original sitting, while other variants require sitting the full exam again. The specifics vary by variant and by test center. Always ask the center where you registered what your retake options look like before sitting, so you know whether one weak block means a single-block retake or a full resit. If your timeline is tight, this question shapes how you allocate prep effort across the four skills.

How often is telc Deutsch offered, and where?

telc Deutsch is administered by a global network of certified telc test centers, with the densest coverage in Germany and across Europe. In the United States, telc centers are concentrated around German cultural institutes, integration-program providers, and university-affiliated language centers. Session frequency varies by center: some run monthly, others quarterly, others on demand. Most centers offer the standard adult tracks (A1-C2); the specialty variants (Pflege, Medizin, Beruf, Hochschule) are offered by a smaller subset, so identify a center that runs your specific variant before booking flights or locking your prep schedule. The current center list lives at telc.net.

How long does telc prep take?

Depends on your starting level, target level, and variant. An A2-to-B1 jump targeting telc Deutsch B1 für Zuwanderer typically takes three to four months at one or two weekly lessons plus consistent daily exposure. B1-to-B2 usually takes four to six months because the formal-register writing genuinely takes longer to build. B2 Pflege or B2-C1 Medizin candidates usually need an additional two to three months on top of their base level for the domain vocabulary and scenario layer. C1 Hochschule candidates jumping from solid B2 typically need four to six months. There's no shortcut around writing many structured pieces at the exact word count, getting them graded against the rubric, and rewriting under feedback.

Can I take telc prep lessons online?

Yes, and most candidates do. The telc-prep workflow is well suited to video: timed essay drills with shared screens, paired speaking practice with the tutor playing the partner role and recording for playback, Modellsatz review with annotated notes. Most of our telc tutors prep students entirely online via Zoom or Jitsi. Several also offer in-person lessons for candidates who prefer face-to-face work or who want to rehearse the paired speaking format with the tutor physically across the table. The booking widget on each tutor's profile shows available formats and locations.
