The Numerous Dialects of Italy

The Italian language is relatively new. The origin of most of the regional varieties is the same root language, Latin. Most of the Italian dialects are directly descended from colloquial or vulgar Latin, as opposed to the more formal Classical or Late Latin. In addition to this, there are long-standing communities that have been speaking other Indo-European root languages such as Cimbrian, Arbëresh (Albanian), Slavomolisano (Slavic), and Griko (Greek).

The official and most widespread Italian dialect originated as the Tuscan dialect in medieval Italy. Alongside this, there are numerous regional dialects that also originated from vulgar Latin.  Below is a non-exhaustive list of regional Italian dialects:

  • Friulian
  • Lombard
  • Occitan
  • Piedmontese
  • Sardinian (including Catalan, Tabarchino, Sassarese, and Gallurese)
  • Sicilian
  • Ladin
  • Mòcheno
  • Veneto
  • Neapolitan
  • Romanesco

Italian Accented English:

Nothing is worse than a bad Italian accent unless that is what you are trying to do of course. We help actors and projects to create the perfect Italian-accented English performances. Read about our process here and why it is so important to have a dialect coach for accented English performances.
