The Korean Dialects
There are quiet a few distinct Korean dialects. It has been theorized that this is due to the mountainous nature of the country that resulted in many relatively isolated groups of people, at least until modern industrial times. Below is a partial list of the most well known dialects:
- Hamgyong (Northeastern)
- Pyongan (Northwestern)
- Central Korean
- Gyeonggi
- Chungcheong
- Yeongseo
- Yeongdong
- Hwanghae
- Gyeongsang (Southeastern)
- Jeolla (Southwestern)
- Jeju
- Ryukchin (Yukchin)
